The Oscars doth approach. This Sunday in fact.
I can proudly boast to having seen all TEN, YES TEN, of the movies nominated for best picture this year. (Though it's no thanks to Netflix. I've had to rent elsewhere to catch all of the flicks, while my top requests sit in my queue week after week because they don't have enough copies. I've written three letters to the CEO Reed Hastings, called customer service twice, and downgraded my account all to no avail. They could care less about their customers. Their business model SUCKS! But I digress.)
Why am I such a cinephile? I guess because since I was a little girl movies have fed my imagination in a way nothing else could. They definitely spark my own creativity, too. And there's nothing more relaxing and, paradoxically, exciting to me than sitting in a darkened theatre watching a film on the big screen. If joy is what we're all looking for, for me it comes neatly packaged by the local cineplex!
Anyway, I know you're all waiting with baited breath for my Oscar picks (as trivial as all this movie stuff is in the scheme of things), so here you go:
Best Picture: Avatar--in 3D, an incredible ride, an incredible achievement.
Best Actor: Jeff Bridges--it's his turn for a career of great acting jobs (sorry Colin Firth).
Best Actress: Sandra Bullock--this character could have been a carictature and she made her real. I think it's her turn, too, cause everyone just likes her. (Meryl Streep could, and should on merit, edge Bullock out for her incredible portrayal of Julia Child, but I don't think she will.)
Best Supporting Actress: Mo'Nique in Precious. No question there. She was awesome.
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds. He was scary hilarious.
Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow--girl power!
Best Adapted Screenplay: Up in the Air--great comedy and very human drama.
Best Screenplay: Hurt Locker--tense.
Best Animated Film: Up--touching.
So? What do you think?!

I haven't many of these movies at all. In fact I think Up in the Air is the only one!
As a way-too-busy mom, I haven't had time to see movies this past year - so reading about all this allows me to do so vicariously! I look forward to seeing what the winners are.
Most of the movies haven't screened in NZ yet. Sigh. When I lived in the States, I always made sure I watched all the Best Picture noms before the big night, but no way to do that now.
What do I think? WEll, the first thing I think is I'm so JEALOUS you have seen all of these movies! I just have so much trouble finding my way to the theater, even though I absolutely love the movies. I always try to see as many as I can prior to Oscar night, but never succeed. So, I don't have too much to work with here, except that I did see some of these and think Sandra Bullock will win (even though I still love Meryl Streep...)
I hear there are theatres that are doing Oscar movie marathons tomorrow and Sunday so you can see the contenders before the show!
I just did not/do not/will not love Up in the Air. Maybe it is just George Clooney burn out. Mostly because I hate that people call it the ultimate travel movie, when it has nothing to do with traveling--just transportation.
Wow - good for you for watching all those movies! Sorry you're having such a %^&$ of a time with Netflix. I use the instant play feature to watch reruns of TV shows (I don't have cable, so this is a cheap amusement for me). I agree with Vera that Up in the Air is more of a transportation than a travel movie.
We almost never go to an actual movie theater, so I haven't seen any of these yet. As you pointed out, some are probably available on Netflix now, but they haven't come up on our list yet.
But based on what I've read, I think your picks are good ones.
Hi Nancy, I'm impressed that you've seen all 10 nominees. That's impressive! Although you didn't ask my opinion, I really appreciate you sharing your Netflix experience. I don't have an account, so it's eye-opening to see how customers are treated by a company that so many praise. Anyway... I think your description of why Sandra Bullock will win the Oscar is spot-on. And put better than many movie critics!
What do I think? I think it's awesome that you've seen every single flick! I've seen only Up in the Air. I think having seen all of the movies will make watching the Oscars more fun.
It will be fun to see whether your predictions come true! I have not seen most of these films, I'm afraid, and I'm with Vera re. Up in the Air. The part I liked was the real people, ranting about having lost jobs.
We just saw an excellent French movie from Netflix: The Class. It was almost like a documentary and the same topic as The Wire, Season 4.
PS. I forgot one other film I did see and recommend, nominated for Best Documentary: Food, Inc.
Uh-oh. I better catch up with modern life because I haven't seen any of these movies. But I do want to view Avatar in 3D before it leaves the movie theaters.

Wow! I think you're on the money with almost all of your Oscar picks. Quick question: Which film would you have chosen for best documentary?
Hello. My wife and I bought our house about 6 months ago. It was a foreclosure and we were able to get a great deal on it. We also took advantage of the 8K tax credit so that definitely helped. We did an extensive remodeling job and now I want to refinance to cut the term to a 20 or 15 year loan. Does anyone know any good sites for mortgage information? Thanks!
Mike
I read your post after Oscar night--you were spot-on, well almost. I must say I was pulling for The Hurt Locker over Avatar.
What a great resource!
